3 week course:
SKY WATCHING
(AN INTRO TO ASTRO)
7.30pm - 9.30pm at Caroline of Brunswick near the Level
1. Learn the‘map of the heavens’
Over the year there is a fixed parade of a
dozen or so constellations passing
overhead.
Some of them are familiar zodiac signs,
others have names you may only recognise
from Greek mythology.
You will be learning to recognise all of
these constellations by sight
2. Every night you can see at least 2 or 3 planets
These are usually bright and easily visible.
Find out how to spot them and begin to
follow their wanderings across the starscape.
To make sense of their movements we also
look at the scale and movement of all the
bodies that make up our solar system
3. The Moon always seems on the move
Zooming around the sky, sometimes Full,
other times just a slither - and half the time
it’s about during the day!!!
On this course you can make sense of the
Moon’s motions and even bring its rhythms
into your everyday life
4. So where are we in the Universe?
How do we travel through the Galaxy?
and what does our Galaxy get up to?
These and other cosmic questions will all be
asked and answered
The course costs £25 (concessions available)
and each participant gets a free local astrolabe

Young and old alike are invited to bring any of their rubbish along to the Space Junk geodome where you can turn it into a space rocket or habitation module - show us how youre going to live when we finally make it into outer-space!!!

All night Bonfire Vigil
-
instead meet at 6.00am for the
Galactic Centre, Sun, Earth and Full Moon allignment and
Winter Solstice Eclipse of the Moon at Hollingbury Hillfort
more astro info and details about the alignment are here
An Astonishing alignment of the Centre of the Galaxy, Our Sun, the Planet Earth and the Full Moon takes place from around 6am on 21st September (Winter Solstice)
come and witness and experience this with us by joining the fire at the top of Hollingbury Hillfort anytime from 9pm on the 20th all through the night
Please bring warm clothes and blankets, plus any personal stories of your experiences of the Sun, Earth, Moon or even Galactic Centre Point which we can all share to focus our thoughts and tune our minds to these cosmic bodies
firewood would be welcome plus anything else that would help pass the longest night of the year!
The Full Moon will be tracing a high and bright path (curiously showing the line the Sun travels on the Summer Solstice) - just before it begins to set in the West, at around 6.30am bigger and bigger chunks will start to be taken from it as it passes in front of the Moons shadow
Just as the Moon is completely put into shadow it will set and the Sun will rise
As the Sun rises it will be exactly in front of the Galactic Centre Point. This is the black hole at the centre of our spiral galaxy around which all the billions of stars in our galaxy revolve around
please try to come early in the morning, perhaps from 6- 630am to catch the eclipse and Sunrise
THE VIGIL WILL NOT BE ON COS OF RAIN AND
CLOUD!!!!
